Need to prove this right marriage
from Kerry MacINTOSH KW

We had been told that James (Tiemi) Parker's father was one Captain Horace James Parker - a European whaler. However I could find no information about this man and suspected this may not be correct. Your information has confirmed that.I wondered where you discovered the 1861 marriage to Jack Parker and how you knew about Riria and her son James.

Riria Taihekeheke (NgaiTahu/Ngati Mamoe) who was later known as Lydia Cannon was born at Kaikoura abt 1825-1826 and the story goes that she and her aunt Riria Parata were kidnapped by Te Rauparaha in 1828 and taken to Kapiti Island. Lydia Cannon died at East Clive, Hawkes Bay on April 19th 1891 aged 65.

Her son James (Tiemi) Parker was born in Wellington, according to his death certificate, and died at Napier Hospital on October 22nd 1927.

There is no connection that I am aware of to Captain John Howell. Elizabeth Rachel Howell was born Feb 18 1856 and died in February 10th 1885 aged 28.
Her parents were David Howell (son of John Howell and Ann Cordery) and Ann daughter of Robert and Sarah Russell. John Howell worked in the Wellington district and was killed on the Miramar Peninsula in 1851. Howell emigrated from England
Elizabeth Rachel Howell married James (Tiemi) Parker at Napier on March 7th 1876.

They had five children

Marion Edith May Parker b June 28th 1876
Horace Stanley James Parker b 1879
Hilton Harrington Lorne Parker b 1880
Elsie Eva Parker b 1882
Ethel Parker b 1883

Here is another interesting piece of information
Mary Smith (nee Parker) = (1) William Stirling = (2) James Smith - died May 30 1907 aged 79, buried Bluff. According to the death register her mother was Hine Te Ururaki.
Would it be reasonable to assume that Hine Te Ururaki is the mother of all four of John Parker's children?
I see Mary's son Hoani Tarena (John Stirling) is in "the Blue Book". I will request a copy of his whakapapa from the Ngai Tahu Whakapapa Unit.
Different sources ( whakapapa) have different possible birth dates in Kaikoura. e.g. Kerry CON:LON/Brenda CROZIER have approx 1826. Heke CLARK has 1812.

Immigration: if purchased land Mangamuka 1831 then must have arrived before then. There is also a marriage record 1834.

Following email from Dennis WRIGHT 17/5/13
Over the years I have corresponded with a lady, Cerise BLAGROVE of Christchurch, who is descended from Joseph WRIGHT of Bay of Islands. She appears to have evidence that there was a Joseph AND a Joseph W WRIGHT in the area.
I quote from her letter to me of 2007:-
My 3rd great-grandfather's name was Joseph WRIGHT. He immigrated to the Bay of Islands in 1840 with my 3rd grt grandmother Ann BLAGROVE and their child Valentine BLAGROVE, they had first settled in Adelaide in 1838. One of the reasons I think they may have chosen NZ is perhaps the presence of another Joseph William WRIGHT and John WRIGHT.
Joseph William WRIGHT immigrated to NZ in 1831 on the "Sir George Murray" he came with "Mr WELLER" probably Joseph WELLER one of the main Whaling families of the day. WELLER returned to Australia a few months later while WRIGHT stayed.
Joseph W WRIGHT was a Blacksmith at Otarihau which was right next to the land that the other Joseph WRIGHT bought land at called Otterigo used mainly in timber trading. My Joseph WRIGHT was a wine merchant by trade but was probably involved in timber trading too.
Joseph WRIGHT had another son by his wife Elizabeth CLARKE, named Henry Clarke WRIGHT who immigrated to Melbourne in 1853 with his family. I know they kept in contact with Joseph WRIGHT in NZ.
In a later letter, Cerise states that Joseph W WRIGHT and John WRIGHT in the Bay of Islands (the Capt?) were the nephews of her Joseph WRIGHT who was born in Middlesex the son of John WRIGHT of Hertfordshire. She then states that (Capt) John WRIGHT was bap 26 Mar 1819 and Joseph W WRIGHT was bap 21 July 1820 in Middlesex sons of John WRIGHT brother of her Joseph WRIGHT.
Hokianga Censuses, 1838, 1846 list Joseph as a sawyer but no wife or family.
On panel to consider a land claim 23 aug 1834 deed 263 see Thomas MITCHELL. Joseph William Wright immigrated to to Hokianga about 1830 probably arrived before 1834 MARKHAM ESR had 1834.4 He was a sawyer, Mangamuka, Hokianga in 1838.2 He was a sawyer, Hokianga in 1846.5
