The descendants of James Reddy Clendon have been researched by Philippa Holmes. James Reddy Clendon was a New Zealand pioneer. He was the first US consul to New Zealand. In February 1840 he was a signatory to the Treaty of Waitangi as a witness to Chief Pomare. He sold land at Okiata (Russel) to the British government who planned to build the capital city on it. Jane Takotowi COCHRANE (photo) was born on 28 Jul 1838 in Rahu-Rahu Hokianga, New Zealand. She died on 21 May 1919 in Rawene, Hokianga, NZ. She was also known as Princess Takotawi Te Whata and also Mihi Kererene. When aged 18 Jane married the 55 year old widowed James. She was a cousin of the Chiefs Patuone and Tamati Waka Nene with an ancestory on her mothers side going back to "Kupe". Her father was an Irish settler. In 1974 her house at Rawene "Clendon House" was bought by the NZ Historic Places Trust. It is now open as a museum. James Reddy CLENDON and Jane Takotowi COCHRANE had the following children:

1820 met with Thomas KENDALL in London and arranged for KENDALL to purchase land for him. KENDALL subsequently purchased 40,000 acres for 36 axes in the Hokianga. When the Baron arrived 17 years later the local Maori disputed his ownership! But gave him a smaller allocation.
He came with 93 settlers from Sydney.

Richard was an educated young man when he was convicted in Gloucestershire on the 28th March 1812 (Lent) of murder [1] and sentenced to a life term. He was transported to Port Jackson, Australia on the Earl Spencer [2] arriving on 9th October 1813
It was on board the Earl Spencer that Richard met Thomas Kendall. Kendall found much to occupy himself in acting as teacher and chaplain to such of the convicts as were willing to receive him. Richard's good behaviour and enthusiasm to please Kendall resulted in Captain Mitchell appointing Richard as servant to Kendall.
Richard was permitted to accompany the Kendall family as a convict servant to New Zealand (for a leave of 3 years) on the security of Thomas Kendall. So he arrived at the Bay of Islands on the Active in late 1814.
He was often involved in disagreements and fights with his fellow missionaries. It is also stated that he fathered a child to his master's wife, Jane Kendall. Richard Stockwell was a servant to Thomas KENDALL in 1814.1 He immigrated to arrived Bay of Islands on the Active. on 19 November 1814 ESR has arrived Active 19 dec 1840 clearly a typo.10,2,6 He emigrated in 1817.4
