1858 was witness in court relating to someone accused of stealing palings off Joseph WRIGHT's fence. Val hid in the garden to try and spot the offender. Perhaps he and his mother were living with Joseph?
RST states that Joseph was Valentine's father but Valentine didn't know this until much later.

according to a descendant there were two Val BLAGROVES. One was probably uncle to Mrs Val BLAGROVE who arrived with her son, also called Val. First in the list is the elder, arr 1838. He probably left NZ later. Dates added in are for the younger ie: Mrs BLAGROVE's son.

DEATH OF OLD COLONIST.
MR. JAS BOSWELL. Another of the rapidly-disappearing band of' old colonists died recently at Waihi; in the person of Mr. James Boswell. Deceased, who was in his 75th year, was born in Auckland, his parents having arrived in the Jane Gifford. Mr. Boswell's early boyhood was spent on Kawau Island,and he saw service in the Waikato. War. Later he followed mining pursuits, and was at the opening of the Thames goldflelds, and later at Coromandel, where he resided for upwards of 30.years. Deceased is.survived by Mrs.Boswell, seven sons, and three daughters.
