Family returned to England 1859? 3 sons later returned to NZ
there was a John FELL BOI 1837 JL
Wrote a journal of his voyage to NZ. "A Colonist's Voyage to New Zealand "
"An emigrant voyage of 15 weeks under sail in the 1840s is usually thought of today as grim in the extreme. The myth is dispelled in by far the best account of such a voyage. The true atmosphere of shipboard life is captured in Fell's journal. The amusements and pastimes of debates ("Are the mental endowments of the two sexes naturally equal?" - yes, perhaps diplomatically, by a majority of one); parties, practical jokes: the peculiarities of shipboard housekeeping with live sheep, pigs and poultry: the necessities of life at sea (take eight dozen shirts, plenty of fresh water, end ensure your bed is not more than two feet wide). New Zealanders whose forbears came out under sail will relish this book. Alfred Fell, who founded the firm of Fell and Seymour, sailed with settlers for Nelson in September 1841 in the Lord Auckland." Published by Capper Press, Christchurch, 1973,
The family including 8 children returned to England 1859 for the children's education. Not sure how many returned to NZ later. MDL. Alfred Fell immigrated to left ENG 1841 on the Lord Auckland to Nelson then to New Plymouth 1842 in 1842.4 He was a merchant, Brook St., Nelson in 1844.2 He emigrated from Nelson to ENG in January 1859.5
