Could be timber merchant BOI?
From KEBL
"Thank you very much for the information. Our Thomas Black, wife Mary Ann and eldest son Robert came to New Zealand in February 1835 onboard the schooner Fortitude (owned by Captain Clendon) - the Clendon family were onboard also. William and Mary Ann's baptisms (as mentioned in your email) made them the 2nd and 3rd children born in the marriage. There were two other children born too: Thomas jnr. 1843 and Sanderson (Alexander) in 1844.
We know Thomas senior as Thomas Sanderson Black (his mother was a Sanderson) and that he knew the Bishop Williams from his death notice in 1888. I've been hunting for information that would help me locate where he lived in the Bay of Islands 1835-1845. Old newspapers in 1840 contain advertisements for his timber business (in partnership with William Green and John Stuart) located at 'Tawkainga' - probably Taukainga or Tuakainga - opposite Russell, which was actually at Okiato in 1840.
Thomas Black (snr) was a coastal trader for most of his life in New Zealand and a strong church member. So I'd always thought that he would not really want his family living at Kororareka (the hell hole of the pacific at the time) which has lead me to think he might have initially stayed with the Williams families until he found his own place to settle or that he may have worked with/for the brothers Williams. Which is why the 'servant' reference peaked my interest.
I have not been lucky enough to find any reference to him in Henry Williams or William Williams journals either. But I do know (from Thomas's own writing) that he had sawyers and storemen working for him at Kororareka, Taukainga, Puketona and Tutukaka. Some of his land claims were for Puketona and Tutukaka.
At the same time there was also an Alexander Black living at Kororareka (1840). I do not think that he is related as Alexander Black was from Scotland - but you never know. Thomas Sanderson Black (born about 1805-1807) came from County Tyrone, Northern Ireland as did his wife Mary Ann Black nee Lyons."
1844-45 had a share in ownership along with Thomas SCOTT and William GREEN in the ship Governor Fitzroy STWH. Thomas Sanderson Black immigrated to arrived BOI feb 1835 on the Fortitude in 1835 ESR has immigrated to BOI 1843.2 He was a servant, Waimate, BOI in 1835.1 He was a timber merchant in BOI in 1840.6
