Edward Bloomfield Clarke

Edward Bloomfield Clarke was born on 4 May 1831 in Waimate, BOI, NZ, ESR has KiriKiri.

3,4 Edward was the first child to be baptized in the new church at Waimate North on 10 July 1831, and which also has a memorial lectern and a commemorative plaque recording the baptismal date.
Edward went to England as a young man to study, at the Church Missionary college, Islington, London, hoping to be ordained there. Ill health intervened and he went to Australia. He was finally ordained there on 6 July 1856 at Melbourne and was appointed Curate at Belfast, some 200 miles from Melbourne, working under the Archdeacon of Portland, in 1857He married Susanne Frances Wood born 13 June 1834, Sydney. Granted priest's orders in December 1858, he was invited to New Zealand. After spending some time with his wife's family in Sydney he arrived in New Zealand 1859. In 1860 after a few weeks in the Bay of Islands he left for Tauranga to assist Rev Charles Baker in establishing a new school and church there. His wife followed in November when their new home was ready. He returned to the Bay of Islands in 1862 on the death of Rev. R. Davis, and was appointed acting vicar of Waimate in 1863, where he took over care of the Mission station and district.
Edward became Archdeacon of Te Waimate in 1870, and in 1884 owing to increasing duties in his MÄ?ori Mission district he resigned as Te Waimate incumbent and made his headquarters in Auckland. He lived at Conquest Place at St George's Bay. Susanne, died 17 Dec 1890 in Auckland. Interred beside the little Church at the end of Judge's Bay Road, Parnell and overlooking Judge's Bay. His wife's mother, Rachel Ann Sophia Wood, died 5 April 1886, aged 90, is also interred at Judge's Bay Parnell. He died Auckland on 22nd October 1900 in his 70th year. CLFA. The first of the Clarke children to be born in the Waimate Mission House. Rev William Yate baptized him on 11 August 1832. On 2 June 1858, at Kerikeri, (Rev Richard Davis was the officiating minister).
Married Elizabeth Kemp, born 23 February 1823. It shows in the Elect. Roll that Marsden farmed Rarere at Kerikeri, from 1857 - 58 He sold it when Mr. TC Williams was building up the Kerikeri Estate. It is written in one of George Clarke's letters to his father in March 1865, that Hopkins held a Government appointment of a subordinate nature, He returned to Waimate, and acted as a lay preacher where he took over care of the mission station and district.
Wyatt was born in 1866. In 1868 - (ER) 500 acres of land called Onwood, living for many yeas in a large house at Kimihia, a promontory between Kerikeri and Okura rivers. (This house was later divided into two and part of it is now situated in Cobham Rd, and owned by Mr. S McTavish. Hopkins lived in the house, Rodmar, for a period of time, and owned land Adjoining Rodmar. Elizabeth died at Waimate North 30 December 1903. Hopkins died aged 80 on 10 February 1913. CLFA. Hopkins Clarke was baptized on 11 August 1832 in Waimate, BOI, NZ.

(Second daughter of James and Charlotte Kemp). William and Mary, Henry and Sarah all moved into Prospect. William and Mary continued on at Prospect and farmed the area at Waimate North.
William retired in 1880 transferring Prospect to son William; moved to 'Resthaven', Clonbern Road Auckland He then lived with his daughter Alice at Waingaro until his death on 26 Aug 1914. They had 6 children, Annie, Alice, William, Emily, George and Fredrick CLFA. William Clarke was baptized on 8 April 1827 in Kerikeri, BOI, NZ.
