Biography

John Betts Clarke was born about 1840 in Waimate, BOI, NZ.1,2,3,4 He and Emily Wyatt were married. He died on 1 October 1916, at age ~76, in Waimate, BOI, NZ.3,4
George Clarke, after returning from Auckland with his family, John, Marsden, Martha, Sarah and Henrietta, grew up at Grove Cottage. John was appointed People's Warden at Waimate in 1872. (ER) In 1868 He and Marsden farmed the Grove Cottage land.
John became sole owner and occupier of Grove Cottage land, somewhere after Marsdens death in 1889. He supplied Kauri for the Kauri for the first A&P show held at Grove Cottage in 1888. In 1872, John was appointed Peoples Warden. In 1899, married Emily Wyatt Watling, born 1835, a widow of Dr Wyatt Watling who died 1896. John and Emily apparently lived for a period at least in the home of her brother, Major Watling, in the mission house at Waimate North, first built by George Clarke.
Frances and Mary Clarke (children of Marsden Clarke) apparently spent a time with them, there and again. Uncle John and Aunt Emily in particular were regarded by these two girls as very straight-laced. John and Emily went and lived for a period of time at Akarana in an Old Hotel, a short distance from the Grove cottage property. Grove cottage was rented out to Rev. Philip Walsh, Archdeacon of Waimate from 1902 until his death in 1914. CLFA. John Betts Clarke was baptized on 8 August 1840 in Waimate, BOI, NZ.2

Biography

Marsden Clarke was born in 1837 in Waimate, BOI, NZ.1,2,3 He and Frances Emily Stuart were married. He died on 10 May 1889, at age ~52, in Waimate, BOI, NZ.2,3
Baptized 2 May, he spent some of his childhood at the Mission house, would have lived in Auckland with his parents and after returning to Waimate North lived at Grove Cottage until his marriage.

Married at Waimate Frances Emily Stuart, born 7 January 1855, daughter of Bishop Craig Stuart, a missionary in India for many ears. Because of ill health her father went to Sydney, where his brother Sir Alexander Stuart was premier, to recuperate. The Church Missionary society persuaded him to go to NZ to enquire into disputes re native lands and naturally went to Waimate where Frances met and married Marsden Clarke.

They farmed a property known as 'Whakamaru' (The MÄ?ori name for home) Part of OLC 55 across from the mission house attaching to grove cottage Between Paparimurimu Stream and Waipatukahu Stream. As written in his fathers letter, to his grandfather dated 14 March 1865. Marsden, served time as Georges Secretary, of the Native Land Court, of which George had been appointed Judge in 1861.
In 1868 Marsden and John farmed Grove Cottage together. In 1888 the first AMP Show was at Grove Cottage farm. Marsden was the first president. And John Clarke gave Kauri timber for the Show Building. Marsden was twenty years older than Frances when he died 10 May 1889 at Waimate North, leaving her a widow with three young children.
After two further years at Waimate North she was persuaded by her father, (who had been appointed Bishop of Waiapu, at Napier) to join them there. She augmented her meager income from the farm by teaching music, visiting the homes of her pupils. When her daughter Mary's children were still young she joined them at 'Strathallan,' Pirongia, where she died July 1925. Buried at Purewa. CLFA. Marsden Clarke was baptized on 2 May 1837 in Waimate, BOI, NZ.4

Diamond Wedding
Mr and Mrs William Flinn, of Port Fitzroy, Great Barrier, on Tuesday celebrated their diamond wedding, to join in which relatives and friends travelled from all parts of the Auckland Province. Mr Flinn arrived in New Zealand with his parents in 1837, at the age of four, his future wife coming across from Tasmania with her parents two years later. They were married at St. Patrick?s Cathedral on January 6th, 1854, and in 1860 went to reside at the Great Barrier, which has been their, home ever since. Mr Flinn's hospitality (says the Auckland ?Star?) is a household word among yachtsmen, and several Governors of New Zealand have been among his guests, while for the manner in which he helped to alleviate the sufferings of the Wairarapa survivors a silver teaservice bears witness, and is one of his most prized possessions..

In 1857, three years before New Zealand was proclaimed a British possession, Mr William Flinn, then a boy four years old, arrived in the colony with his parents. Last week he celebrated with Mrs Flinn, at their home at Port Fitzroy, Great Barrier Island, the sixtieth anniversary of their wedding. Miss Truman and Mr Flinn were married in St. Patrick's Cathedral, Auckland, on January 6th, 1854. Mr Flinn pursued his trade of pit-sawing, and in 186O leased an area of land at Port Fitzroy from the Harbour and Mining Company, and removing there with his wife, continued in the company's employ until its dissolution. He then acquired the freehold of the 2000 odd acres, which ever since have been the home of himself and his wife. William (Billy) Flinn immigrated to Sydney to Hokianga on the Nimrod, arriving 4 nov 1837, in October 1837.1,2,3 He was a sawyer in 1860.1
