Two of the Coldicutt family married a Stokes
Lucy Ann married John Coldicutt 2nd son of Willam and Sarah Coldicutt..
Rueben Stokes married Esther Coldicutt
All of the family of Coldicutts ? 4 sons and 3 daughters arrived on the ?Osprey?
?It hauled out of St Katherine Dock by the light from the fire at the Tower of London
bringing the first steam engine inj the colony of New Zealand
and the first company of settlers direct to Auckland from London
The cargo included a prefabricated two storied wooden house and all things deemed necessary to establish a settlement.
William Coldicutt was employed as a skilled engineer for the New Zealand Manukau and Waitemata Company,
who planned to establish a settlement and milling operation at Cornwallis on the Manukau Harbour
After an adventure filled voyage the ?Osprey? arrived at the Waitemata Harbour 4th May 1842,
discharged the house and general cargo at the primitive settlement of Auckland,
then sailed around the Manukau where the mill was landed at the projected settlement of Cornwallis.
This venture however, was not successful and the settlers eventually dispersed throughout the country. ?

Have not worked out at this time who they all are but this Mary did emigrate some time without her husband who had died in England in 1843 ...
They were not her children so they may have been grandchildren
VERY UNUSUAL for a woman that age to be allowed to emigrate, the children (if they were still children) would have been a big factor in allowing her to go
ALSO on board was Jacob Russ, her daughter Elizabeh's father in law (his wife Hannah Priddle had died in 1845), with Jonah Russ his son (Elizabeth's brother-in-law)
Elizabeth and Job had emigrated to New Zealand on the SIR CHARLES FORBES 14 years earlier in 1842.

John Hayes (Hone Heihi) first came into prominence when he took up his abode at Omaewa (near Port Awanui) with another pakeha known to the natives as ?Ropiha.? During the hearing of the Omaewa case in 1874, the evidence satisfied Judge Heale that the year of their arrival was 1834. Tamati Porourangi built a store for them in return for two casks of powder and one cask of tobacco. All the timber was adzed. Their house was provided with the first stone chimney erected in the Waiapu district. They were welcomed by both sets of claimants to the block. ?Europeans were thought much of in those days,? a witness said, ?for they sold us guns and powder as well as other goods.? Some natives built whares (native homes) close to their store.
There were at least five John Hayes in Sydney who could have fitted the bill. No idea when or where he died ? he had two sons John (Hone) and Ben (Pene) but the surname has died out in the East Coast. Hone Jnr had a daughter who was Crowe?s ancestress.
